About my talismans
For countless centuries humans have clad themselves in some type of armour. For spiritual, ritual, personal or ceremonial purpose. Before ascending into battle or the unknown.
"Cast your mind back to the Celts & observe. Their breath united with the breathing forests, their eyes flickered with the flittering feather from their bird kin, their hearts pounding with the wild beasts of the woods". -Unknown
Whether it truly protected them or not, they felt it gave them power and protection. While jewellery; amulets or talisman may actually not deflect speeding arrows, battle axes or bullets, I believe they bring us the power of positive thinking, of self awareness and empowerment, a connectedness to something more powerful than us but innately within us all.
The creation of the work itself is a ritual. I am aware of the energy I bring into the space I am working, to truly focus on and alchemize thoughts and emotions for the intention of the pieces. I want them to be the adornments you reach for and wear for ritual, for everyday, for when you need to feel a sense of self-empowerment. And when not on the body; to have hanging on display or kept on personal altars or in intimate sanctuaries.
Many of the pieces I create are primitive in appearance or have an “old world” appeal. They have flaws, are rustic and full of story. I have a fondness for collecting components for the work, often searching for the most unique. Sometimes scavenged, repurposed or found in nature. I work mostly with brass, leather, recycled sterling silver and repurposed components. I am always learning about my process and ways of working with the different materials, ever evolving. You may also see Deer and other animal and bird bones in my work, these components are ethically sourced and always collected and processed with the deepest reverence.
Because of the unique elements of my work, my pieces are usually one of a kind and no two pieces will ever be quite the same, even if I do make two of them.
